our story
Josh owns and operates Balanced Structural Engineering along with his wife, Amanda. Josh and Amanda both graduated from Saint Martin’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2011. Since college, Amanda and Josh got married and had their son, Luke. Balanced Structural Engineering was started to better "balance" time with work and time with family and to be able to develop a better connection with our clients. Working directly with their clients to help them achieve their dreams has become a passion and with BSE Josh and Amanda are more equipped than ever to do just that!
Joshua Mergens, PE, SE
After a brief internship, Josh started his career at M C Squared Engineering in Olympia. He worked at M C Squared for seven years, during which he obtained his Professional Engineering License and moved from a junior designer role to independently managing projects and clients. In 2018 he then worked for Exeltech Consulting in Lacey as a Senior Project Manager. During his time at Exeltech, Josh obtained his Structural Engineers License and developed/led a Building Structural group within the company. After 3 years with Exeltech, he opened Balanced Structural Engineering with the mission of “Using the art of Structural Engineering to design durable, practical, and economic structures to help our clients realize their vision.”
Amanda Mergens
Amanda started her career working for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a Naval Architect for nearly 10 years. She later went back to school to refine her drafting skills, as well as learn BIM (Building Information Modeling) and building design. in 2019, Amanda opened Mergens Home Design where she has performed designs of remodels/additions, new construction homes, restaurant renovations, and quality control for BIM model development. Since the start of BSE, she has supported both companies with her building design and engineering backgrounds. Now the two companies work together seamlessly to best serve all their clients with a breadth of experience and a passion for helping clients complete their projects.
